The difference, in plain terms

FreshBooks began as an invoicing tool and grew into an accounting one. It handles estimates, recurring invoices, expenses, bank connections and the reports a tax preparer asks for, and its time tracker feeds the invoice the way everything else does. If you want one place for the whole money side of a small business, it is a sound choice, and the price is for the accounting.

Kairos is only the hours and the invoice. It does not keep your books, reconcile a bank account or file anything. It tracks time against a client and a rate, and on invoice day it turns the unbilled entries and expenses into an invoice with your tax line, due date and logo. The client gets a PDF and a page to pay from, through your own Stripe account or your bank details. A monthly retainer drafts its own invoice. If your books are in QuickBooks Online or Xero, Kairos syncs its invoices there, so the bookkeeping stays where it already is.

That narrowness is what the price buys. Basic is $0.99 a month for one person on the web; Pro is $1.99 with the iPhone app and up to five members included, where FreshBooks is $23 a month plus $11 for each person you add. Both are founding prices, locked for life for the first 500 workspaces.

If you want your accounting, expenses and invoicing in one system with automatic payment reminders, or your accountant already works in FreshBooks, FreshBooks is the better fit.
